   History

He studied privately with Farrar (1914-16) and Bairstow (1917-22) and lived most of his life in the country. Influenced by Elgar and Vaughan Williams as well as his teachers, he developed an intimate style and concentrated on songs, particularly settings of Hardy. Other works include a clarinet concerto (1949) and Dies natalis for high voice and strings (1939).
